Dun & Bradstreet / Hoovers

D&B really wants to sell you a subscription.  Thus the annoying popup that won't leave you along when you're on their site.  Wouldn't you like to have a live chat with a sales person?  No thanks!  Nevertheless, they still give away some good information for free.  This site includes directory information on thousands of companies, public and private, but mostly if they're big. Information includes good company descriptions, a list of top execs, address & phone, sales, number of employees, stock data and more, plus links to other Web-based resources related to your search. Search options include company name, person name, and industry.  Excellent in-depth profiles can be purchased on-line, but the free resources are substantial. If you're looking for information on a smaller company, they would love to sell you a Dun & Bradstreet report.
